BEYOND THE STONE WALL presents Karen Pizzitola’s watercolors of rural New England—places she sees as holding the memories of the people who once called them home.

Old barns, weathered farmhouses, and stone wall invite a closer look. Through her careful attention, these often-overlooked places become a source of stillness, recognition, and connection.

When Karen Pizzitola passes an old farmhouse, she wonders about the lives once lived inside. Someone celebrated a birthday there. Someone loved, laughed, and dreamed. The building remains, even as those lives recede from view.

That curiosity is at the heart of Beyond the Stone Wall. Drawn to rural New England’s overlooked and disappearing places, Pizzitola finds meaning in weathered wood, stones laid generations ago, and the stillness of a snow-covered field at night. Each holds a connection to people we may never know.

Born in Maine and now living in Ellington, Connecticut, she finds ongoing inspiration in the farms and tobacco fields around her. Her watercolors ask us to give these familiar surroundings more than a passing glance, to consider what they have witnessed and why they still move us.

There is nostalgia here, but also the pleasure of looking closely. Pizzitola hopes her paintings offer the quietness she finds in these places, awakening pleasant memories and a feeling of connection to the past.

The invitation is simple: pause long enough for a place to become more than scenery.
