Yan Jennifer Zhang is a Wallingford, Connecticut-based artist whose wildlife portraits and landscapes bring the natural world into vivid emotional focus. Working in acrylic, oil, and mixed media, she uses unexpected color to explore the individuality of living things, finding tenderness in powerful forms and emotional presence in a watchful gaze.
Behind the vitality of her paintings is a deeply personal commitment to living. Through serious health challenges, Zhang continued working, caring for others, and creating. Painting became a way to push forward, explore her capabilities, and give something meaningful of herself to the world. The joy she seeks to share carries the conviction of someone who understands how precious the opportunity to create can be.
A Creative Life Taking Shape
Zhang’s creative foundations began in China’s fashion industry, where she worked in buying, merchandising, and design. In 2007, while living in Hangzhou, she gave herself a fashion-design course as a birthday gift. Training in drawing, color relationships, and proportion gave practical expression to an interest in art that had begun in childhood.
After relocating to the United States, she began developing a painting practice alongside her work in wellness. She made her first painting in the United States in 2016, following online tutorials, then pursued further instruction. Between appointments in her massage therapy practice, she painted, using her earnings to support her artistic education.
She studied acrylic painting and oil portraiture with Marc Anthony Massaro at Branford Art Studio and completed Milan Art Institute’s Mastery Program in July 2026. Her development has been sustained by a willingness to keep learning and a determination to make creativity central to her life.
Color, Character & Connection
Animals hold a particular fascination for Zhang. Their gestures, expressions, and individual quirks offer a starting point for paintings that move beyond naturalistic color. Expressive hues and layered surfaces allow her to communicate the personality she perceives within each subject, inviting viewers to look with curiosity and affection.
Her practice also encompasses landscapes, human portraiture, and figures. Experiments with fluid art and mixed media accompany her work in oil, where underpainting and delicate glazes create depth and luminosity. Across these approaches, she returns to the relationship between what we see and what we feel.
For Zhang, a painting’s significance continues beyond the studio. She hopes her work will bring happiness into someone’s home, encourage a connection with animals, and draw attention to the beauty and vulnerability of the natural world.
Recognition & Exhibitions
In 2026, Zhang’s painting Iridescent Intent received First Place, the Marge Suzio Memorial Prize, in Gallery 53’s Birds & Blooms Art Exhibit in Meriden, Connecticut. Her exhibition history also includes Gallery 53’s Transforming Reality and presentations at Clark Memorial Library in Bethany.
Her work and personal journey were featured in The Arts Paper’s March 2026 article, “Yan Jennifer Pops Up In North Branford,” following her exhibition at Naumann Gallery.
Yan Jennifer Zhang at Naumann Gallery
At Naumann Gallery, we have witnessed an artist growing into her ambitions. Across our relationship with Zhang, we have watched her confidence deepen, her work develop, and visitors become collectors who return to follow what she creates next. Along the way, “I’m a great artist” became something she could say with conviction.
Those relationships are part of her story. Paintings first encountered in the gallery have become part of people’s homes and daily lives, giving lasting expression to her wish to make a difference through art.
Color of the Wild marks Zhang’s third exhibition at Naumann Gallery in North Branford, returning by special invitation. Her continuing presence reflects our commitment to knowing artists beyond a single exhibition and giving their unfolding work the attention it deserves.
As Zhang writes, “art is simple. It is people's hearts speaking to one another.”
